Pat's Poppy & Margaret's Verse

Good Morning Ladies,
Todays card is another of Pats masterpieces, she has used a lovely Poppy Stamp and a
stunning swirls stamp to fill in the background.
I love Poppies they are so beautiful and poignant too.
A beautiful sentiment finishes the card.
Next I have added a very funny but true statement sent to me by Margaret,
it is very, very true and brings a smile to your face.
So grab your coffee, sit back and relax and read about how we lived and enjoyed
our youth, it is so very true!
I am looking forward to seeing Sue's Launch today, I will however find
it very hard not to comment on the few  that will Leech on to see what
they can gain from our dear, kind Sue, I wish there was a way that Sue could
only include the regular blog members in her draws!
It does frustrate me as they don't even had the common decency to stick around for
a couple of posts afterwards, the post each draw and then again when they come
back to see if they have 'gained'!
I think a few of us will be spitting feathers tomorrow, who is willing to bet
the blog posts go over 300, which hasn't happened since last launch.
Sadly the most affected by this is the kindest lady in the Crafting World,
Our Amazing Sue Wilson x
Huge Hugs Everyone,
Don't forget to read below and leave your comments,
Sandra xxxxx

WE WAS BRUNG UP PROPER !!

“And we never had a whole Mars bar until 1993"!!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL MY FRIENDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1930’s,40's, 50's, and 60's

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank Sherry while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos...

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, bread and dripping, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer.

Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking..

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds , KFC, Subway or Nandos.

Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn't open on a Sunday, somehow we didn't starve to death!

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Toffees, Gobstoppers and Bubble Gum.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter, milk from the cow, and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because.......  WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.   No one was able to reach us all day. And we were OK.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of old prams and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and dens and played in river beds with matchbox cars.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Wii , X-boxes, no video games at all, no 999 channels on SKY ,

No video/dvd films, or colour TV no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms...........WE HAD PROPER FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no

Lawsuits from these accidents.

Only girls had pierced ears!

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time....

We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet because we didn't need to keep up with the Jones's!

Not everyone made the rugby/football/cricket/netball team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! Getting into the team was based on MERIT

Our teachers used to hit us with canes and gym shoes and throw the blackboard rubber at us if they thought we weren't concentrating ....We can string sentences together and spell and have proper conversations because of a good, solid three R's education.

Our parents would tell us to ask a stranger to help us cross the road.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.   They actually sided with the law!

Our parents didn't invent stupid names for their kids like 'Kiora' and 'Blade' and 'Ridge' and 'Vanilla'

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL !

And YOU are one of them!

  2. Hi Sandra. It will just have to be a quick coffee this morning! Love your card Pat, poppies are a favourite of mine. Horrendous eyesight means that I can't quite read the sentiment but I'm sure it's beautiful and very fitting. Oh Margaret, that verse made me smile. As a 60s child there were so many things that rang true. I was a tad accident prone (still am), so much so that my Mam was on first name terms with the staff at Casualty, but it was never an issue and I was always back outside as soon as I could. I see that Sue has delayed her launch but agree totally with your comments. Coffee finished so better go. Have a lovely day. Sue xxx

  3. Good morning Sandra and everyone who calls in today for our cuppie and a chat.
Pat your card is stunning, I love Poppy's, even the different coloured ones, but the red are my favourite and Pat, you have got the colour perfect. Love your sentiment to.
Margaret's list of "when we were young" is so true, We Were Lucky!!! really, we knew how to make something out of nothing when you think of it, we had to use or imagination, we looked around us to see what was at hand to make or build what was in our minds at that point. Now ladies I don't know about you, but I think I am still like that??? Is that not how you often put a card together? I do. I think of it more when I am making my Beer Cakes. ( not a cake, cake made with BEER. No the box has beers in it. No it's the design on and round the box. I have to make one for a F1 fan later on this year, now that's going to be fun. Model shop will be getting visited again. I might just have to put a BEER cake on my blog on Friday for " oldie Friday " .
Sandra I do hope you aren't to exhusted after yesterday's shopping trip, and that the girls got something they liked? Did you manage to squeeze in a little craft shop time??? Thank you again for my cup of tea. Not working this morning, so I will pop back in again for another later on. Hazel x

    1. Hi Hazel,
You are so right, there was no point saying 'I want' when we were young, as 'I wants' certainly did not get! We had to make do, no choice of meals, you are what was put in front of you and with my siblings we washed, dried & put away the dishes afterwards, everytime, without being asked! Our children are well and truly spoilt!
I would live to see one of your Beer Cakes Hazel, they sound a brilliant idea!
Well I had better go and decide what to feed the hoards tonight!

  4. Morning. A new week, a beautiful new card to start our new week, but the same old brain that cant think straight (maybe due to Andy catching up with Top Gear which is far too loud in my ear at this time of day) !! Dog up again at 5.25 and I feel like a zombie ! Just for ONCE id like to wake up feeling refreshed instead of feeling like a piece of lettuce that's been left in the crisper too long, or floppy and lifeless ! Is it bedtime yet ?
Pat, thank you for allowing Sandra to show your stunning works of art. I only ever comment on cards if they are truely beautiful I dont believe in being fake, and rather than 'pick' or insult Id rather just not comment at all, your poppy card is so full of colour but not over powering, can I ask if that is a CE swirl stamp as it looks very similar to the stamp I won on Sue's Sunday comment draw, but unless I drag myself into the den (which is only probably 10 small steps away) but I cant move just now, I cant remember the name of the stamp set - probably just swirls LOL !!
    Anyway its a beauty.
How I smiled at Margarets verse, sooo true, every word brings back some wonderful childhood memories with my friends (what few I had thanks to my mom) but that's another story !!
I could have cried on reading Sue's blog this morning, what bleep bleep suprise ? The one that's been spoilt by craft emails and bloggers that cant keep things under their hat rather than keep quiet they want to be 'the first' to spoil the fun, well cheer's you managed just that ! I knew 3 months before the last launch and was bursting at the seams, but not a single hint came from my finger's !! Anyway Im tired and narky lol and watch the worms come from under their stone hoping to win a free die never to be seen again until the next launch !!! Grrrr. Think I better have coffee number two to wake me up as Im not very nice just now !
Oh Theresa- hope your scan goes ok today, will be thinking of you love.
And Sandra, Sue gave you some brilliant advice as did Saba, go get em and show you wont be treated in this way, complain, complain, complain ! Lots of luck.
    Sending hugs to you all.
Lancashire Steph + 1 soapbox... Sorry xx

    1. Bless you Steph,
Some people just can't keep it buttoned can they! You had even asked for people not to spoil it, like you I knew about a couple of weeks back after an email from Sue, but there was no way I would gave said anything. Firstly because I just wouldn't and secondly because Sue asked me not to say anything on line!
So I totally understand your frustration! Oh my knee is killing today, do you mind if I sit on your soap box?!
My mum never let us have friends back to our house, my parents just weren't very sociable like that! She remains peculiar to this day, she reminds me everytime we speak that she is on her own and lonely, so I will suggest things like having coffee with a neighbour, but apparently they just want to 'know your busines", she is perfectly fit and able but should I suggest getting on a bus, she will say "how can I, I am deaf" (but she has a hearing aid and hears perfectly on the phone") I get frustrated as I am stuck in doors everyday and she had no real excuse! It just frustrates me that I get 'the guilt trip!' Constantly!
Anyway, I will give you your soap box back, to be honest I don't know where all that personal stuff just came from! I guess you are just easy to share things with!
      Sorry sweetie,
      Hugs

  5. Hello Sandra,
What a truly beautiful card this is. I love stamping and colouring and this is just gorgeous. The swirls don't overpower the main image either, and the verse is so true. It's truly lovely Pat.
As for Margaret's statement - It's so true. Scrumping in the orchard at the local Manor house, which was behind a high stone wall which had to be scaled, scraping knees, elbows and arms in the process! Conker hunting in the church grounds, with a brother up a tree and a Policeman asking me why I was alone in the graveyard (I was about 6) and I said that my brother was in the church and I was waiting for him - oh dear fancy lying to a policeman!
Collecting wood for Bonfire Night and making Guys and sitting outside the local shops collecting "Penny for the Guy". Bonfires in the middle of the street, or back lane if you lived in houses with no gardens, and the back doors blistering with the heat!
Playing football or cricket in the street because only one man had a car, and he was a commercial traveller so it wasn't even his.
Off on another completely different tangent - I went to B&Q some time ago for some blackboard paint to freshen up the blackboard the girls used to play with. The assistant said "Chalkboard paint" and I said "No, blackboard paint". This went on for a few minutes and he said "Come with me" and gave me a tin of paint saying "Chalkboard paint". I said "What colour is it" and he said "Black". I'm too old for this, too long in the tooth, I wasn't being racist, I just wanted some paint.
Well ladies, time for a coffee so a Latte please with a date and walnut scone, thank you xxx

    1. Hi Maureen,
It's bureaucracy gone mad, that's what it is and now to confuse the issue even further, in school they have 'white' boards, is that racist too? It's bloody ridiculous that's what it is, I never knew they even changed the name!
I can't believe you would lie to a policeman Maureen, I am shocked, haha, you very quick thinking!
Isn't it funny how we or our parents worried about us, my friend and I used to walk two miles on a Friday to go to a local village Youth Club Disco, we walked back through a graveyard, but there is no way I would let my girls do that now ! But I think it's them that suffer in the long run, the aren't used to the independence that we used to have.
Date & Walnut Scones sound delicious do you have a recipe?
      Live & hugs

What a lovely card , Pat! Your poppy is gorgeous and I really like your swirls. I am guilty of forgetting to use those although I don't have the exact ones you've used. Lovely sentiment too and so true!
I love the poem too! It is also very true. It brought back lots of memories! Yes we had drinks with sugar in them but we didn't have them every day or even several times a day! I remember playing hopscotch with a polish tin! We didn't call it hopscotch in Scotland it was peever, not sure about spelling as never saw that one written down! Lol.
Have signed myself Myra P in Sue's blog today as the other Myra from Florida will maybe comment tomorrow. That's all I'm saying!!
Thank you Brenda, appreciate your kind words.

    1. Hi Myra P
I wonder where all of the names for the games we played came from, 'peever' sounds nothing like 'hop scotch' does it?
We used to have a huge metal climbing frame in our playground at primary school, you wouldn't see that in these 'health and safety conscious days'
Did you all have a 'Witches Hat' style roundabout in your park and a huge metal slide, the old fashion see saw too!
I am sure we will see Myra from Florida tomorrow along with many others, taking the posts to the late 200's maybe into the three hundreds, that's a good 110-120 people that post more than on a no giveaway day, what does that tell you,! Trouble is Sue is too nice, which then leads to people taking advantage!
      Anyway, enough of that.
      Love and hugs

  8. Hello Sandra, I have never been your coffee shop before, but it is lovely. I often have a look at your blog but have never commented, so now is the time I think to take the bull by the horns, so to speak. Pat's card is lovely, there is something about poppies, I bought one from the Tower of London display and put it in the garden where I can see it from the kitchen window.

I love Margaret's poem, I was born in the 40s and everything spoken about is so true, outside all day, parents didn't have to worry about us, came home before it got dark etc.

I think I would like to join you all in a cup coffee now, if that is ok.

Will pop back tomorrow for another. Take care everyone, Jess x

Wow oh wow this is such a beautiful card so crisp and clean looking, I do so love poppies and those swirls look so like the ones I won from Sue's blog. I love how they have been used to draw the eye into the centre of your master piece very clever, thank you Pat for sharing.
Thank you for showing the rather long note Sandra but so pleased everyone has had a trip down memory lane. When I read it I just thought it was so apt after all the things everyone had been remembering. For me it brought back memories of going fishing with my two cousins and all the boys for days on end during summer, we used to have a great time me and 6 boys!
The very best of luck today Sandra with the school and hospital I hope you get them told, it is what they need.

I used to go fishing with my dad and brother, it was a little boring at times, we even used to go with dad to a local estuary to dig for rag worms, we gad mud up to our armpits! Great fun though!

Beautiful card Pat! Also like poppies and the rich red colour is fab .Love the swirls too so there, Beautiful.! Margaret, so true :-) how much easier everything was, if we had known ey... We were always making dens even with hammer and nails, didn't wanted to wear my clogs all the time so had plenty of nails or glass in my feet. Lucky I'm not gone with blood poisoning.Mudcakes yes but no worms ,they were for the fishing rod. In and out at friends places, not many looked their doors. My favourite pastime were the french skipping and the swings or hanging upside down somewhere Hihi don't ask me why, should do it today so my back got stretched out. How much fun we had without all the techno. things there is today. Speaking to the kids is a different languish. I'm feeling a bit better today, Thank you but some of you still have funny heads etc.so I hope you feeling better too soon as not nice to feel like a zombie and the day's just go past. Oh that is a shame Saba, yes I think most of us are going on the Saturday, hopefully it will be other times. Sandra we need more chairs :-) more people are joining us and as it's so cosy here we not leaving yet, tell Paul to put the kettle on again omg if the kids read this they might think we gone mental with our cyber coffee shop Tihi !

  11. Hi Sandra
Hope you had a good day birthday shopping, and I hope you managed to visit a craft shop. Thank you ladies for your kind words regarding my poppy card. MARGARET the swirl stamps were made by ART STAMPS and called EMBELLISHING FLOURISHES. The poppy was by hero arts, and my friend Barbara let me stamp a few of hers out. Margaret's verse is so true to life. I lived in the middle of nowhere and played on the farm whose land we were on. We actually helped with the cutting and bailing up the hay stacks. They were stacked high up and we used to climb them and sit on top. Our milk came from the milk churns that the farmer out out to be collected. So our milk was straight from the cow. Non of this did us any harm. My partner did all of what you said Margaret. Used to play in the school field which is behind us, firing arrows into the air, and standing still to see where they landed. He and a friend kept mice, chickens and rabbits. And guess what, they had to look after them. No leaving it to Mum and Dad once they got bored with them. They thought it was fun so enjoyed looking after them.
I entered a blog for poppy stamps which is an American company, but do have some lovely stamps, and I won some love balloon sdies. I should have them in two weeks. Unlike Kim Robertsons, where we have been waiting for over 3 months, with all the excuses under the sun as to why she hasn't posted them out. I must be on a lucky streak, and I won goodies from Julia
Watts, which were things she did on her Tool Shed, and which she posted last Mon and I received them on Wed. My tea and cake have been demolished so must be off to put my car in for its MOT.

  15. Hello there Sandra,
it is the yokel from Glenochil here just to annoy you all again. Oh boy Margaret, my mum did all that except the drink sherry part(it was a flying angel if she was out on that rare occasion). That was a time when life was fun and there was not as many of the horrible people about that you could just tell from the first word they said that make you want to run like hell back home, and if you ever got in trouble from the local constable, the clip around the ear that he gave you was nothing to what you would get when you got home and mum found out, you got double, one for doing it in the first place and the second lot for the local bobby bringing you back home because you had been caught up to no good. I never knew of telly until we were 8 and even then it was limited to Blue Peter(they have a lot to answer for Valerie Singleton, Peter Purvis and John Noakes). Haaa happy days. Jim and I were actually thin skinned so we didn't come in an egg, we burst wide open so mum was always having us up at casualty at least once a week which living miles from anywhere and not being able to drive and a bus service that ran every couple of hours was not ideal. They seen us so often that they called in the child protection team to check us over as they thought we were abused and that is when it was discovered about the thin skin. The doctors had never actually witnessed anyone with such thin skin before making our acquaintance.....lucky them.
Pat your beautiful card is gorgeous with its bright poppies(which are one of my favourite all time flowers). I love the less is more on this card as it allows each part to shine out in it's own right. Thank you for allowing Sandra to put it up as it deserves to shine out, it is simply beautiful. Pat, i am still waiting for a stamp i won in a blog hop from November for Crafters Companion and have like you had all the excuses that it just doesn't matter anymore. The lass emailed me just the other day to say she would see what she could do at HQ as she said herself it is so unprofessional, but being honest the joy that i had of winning it has completely gone out the window.

Sandra, regarding people and information, it is so annoying when they start treating you like an imbeccible that can't comprehend what they are being told, speaking from personal experience it riles me right up. The hospital i think your next course of action there would be to make a formal complaint to the Chief Executive of the board as they are breaking the law even discussing it without your written permission naming the people that you are willing to see or be spoken to about the wee lass' s condition. The second point would be that they can tell a total stranger that could be absolutely anyone on the phone their findings but cannot tell her MOTHER. No, i think i would be seeking further advice legally as they are bang out of order. sorry, rant over.
    take care dear friend

  18. Pat, love the card poppies are always beautiful and symbolic. I loved the poppies at the tower. My brother saw them said they were moving. My dads uncle died in ww1 and for years we didn't know where his memorial was but finally found it at Tynecot. I always think of him when I see a poppy.

Margaret love your verse. Born just in the 70s but can relate to a lot of it. Spent all my summers on my bike nobody questioned where you were they just knew you would come home. Miss my Rubik's cube thinking of getting one so when on a break and all my ignorant colleagues are on there b....y phones I can get my rubies cube out!!! No one speaks to you anymore. That's another hobby horse obsessions with mobile phones it drives me crazy!!!!

Has anyone come up with the recipe for calorie free Victoria sandwich yet??

Sues big day tomorrow. Hope it goes well for her. Of ourselves millions of commenters never to be seen again. If I were Sue I would say if you haven't commented in previous week you can't be included in any of the draws. That would put paid to them. Another hobbyhorse!!

    See you all tomorrow xxx

  19. Hi Sandra,
I'm sorry I wasn't around yesterday but I wasn't well, I'm under the Hospital and every time I think I'm getting there something happens.
Well this morning I'd like just a wonderful cup of Coffee as I'm on Holiday in May and I'm trying to cut out all the wrong things!
Pat your Card is Truly Fantastic I just Love the Stamps Youve used and the Colouring is Excellent, I Love to see your work.
I Love the Poem from Margaret How True!!
I also agree with you re: Sue's Blog I get so Very Cross when People comment only to Win a Prize it happens every single time I feel for Sue as she has feelings also!
I Love it when someone regular from the Blog wins, when people they say they are too busy to comment, it takes seconds to say Great Card etc
    Take Great Care
    Love and Hugs

  20. Hi Sandra,
I love Pats card isn't she a talented lady. Those poppies are just gorgeous and her swirls look fantastic - I just love it all. I never feel that I can do justice to stamping, I must practice more but I don't think I'll ever be up to your standard Pat .
O dear Margaret, you did take me down memory lane, yes I'm a child of the 40s we didn't have toys, we didn't need them, my family lived until I was about six just outside Coventry then we moved to a village called Whitwick in Leicestershire where I lived until I was 16. Life was a child dream we had a brook opposite our house and woodlands just up the road where we could roam, pick bluebells, climb the trees, swing from the trees even make a Den in the trees. Life was so free in those days, And so was the entertainment. O happy days!
Sandra, hope you manage to sort out the girls birthday presents, wish them a happy birthday from me, will try to remember to do it again on Wednesday but just in case LOL
Hope you managed to get school/hospital/optician sorted out with out giving yourself too much stress.
Is it too late to order a cappuccino with a slice of fruitcake please.

Well we have done our afternoon school run, back home again now having cooked dinner four grandchildren children. Our dinner is almost ready so then I can sit with my feet up.
Good night my lovely friends, hopefully be back tomorrow. Love Brenda xx

  21. Hi Sandra,
Sorry I am a bit late today, hope the coffe machine is still on.
Pat, I really like your poppy card, and your colouring in is perfect. I would love to be able to do it so well, mine just looks like painting by numbers when I have finished. Thank you Sandranfor showing it to us.
Margaret's " we was brung up proper" did make me smile and brought back so many happy memories of our innocent childhoods. I remember penny for the guy particularly well because one year when I was probably no more than 4 or 5 years old, my older brother dressed me in his pyjamas, stuffed straw up the sleeve ends and feet, put a brown paper bag over my head with eye holes cut in and made me sit in a pram and be very still whilst he and his friends pushed me about asking for pennies. I often wonder whether my mum knew what he was doing, but I doubt it, they just let you out in those days without wondering what you were up to. They didn't need to worry.
Maureen made me laugh with her blackboard paint. What a silly old world when we can't use black as an adjective for fear of offending anyone and dustbin men have to be refuse collectors and we have to be "politically aware " before saying anything. Even poor old Enid Blyton had to be rewritten because Noddy used to sleep with Big ears and Apparently that implied improper behaviour. Never occurred to me!!!
Sam, Theresa and Littlelamb, so sorry things are not good for you at the moment, hope things soon improve for you all.
I am so excited to see what Sue has for us tomorrow, I hope all the pre order sites haven't spoiled it for her - I even had an online shop send a mail about the dies and they had pictures of her sample cards. Goodness knows how that came about.
Well, coffee is finished so expect the cafe will be wanting to close now, just remains to say a big welcome to JESS, Sandra's blog is a fabulous place to pop in for a chat, a coffee and the cake of your dreams and not forgetting, the fabulous cards she shows us each and every day.
Love and hugs to you all, especially to you Sandra for your amazing Blog.

  22. Sandra, just popping to welcome Jess, and to say Thersea sorry she didn't get better news with her scan. Not had a good day, handed my notice in tonight. After 12 years of doing every thing for them, she wasn't happy about me claiming mileage for the 781miles I did for them last month, so I told her to get someone else. Blood pressure well up, but you know something I am happy to be retiring. Ok have to think twice about buying dies but hey ho who cares. Hazel x

    1. Don't blame you for handing your notice in. That is certainly very unfair expecting you to pay for your petrol for all the running around. I know when we do it for family we don't expect anything but when it's a job that is different. Can't see them getting anyone else to do it.

    2. Hazel, I am so sorry. You must be so very angry. You did right to hand in your notice and if it's any consolation after 12 years of doing every thing for them, she is going to find it very hard to find someone so dedicated to replace you and I bet she is not going to have a good nights sleep. Hope she has nightmares.
      Thinking about you.

    3. Hi Hazel,
So sorry to gear about your job, I bet they miss you already, but they can't expect you to foot the bill for that amount of driving, they surely don't think that.
What will you do with your time now I wonder! Anything is better than no appreciation at work.
      Enjoy your break,
      Hugs

  23. Hi Sandra,
Me again! I promised to call back !
Just wanted to say to Theresa , sorry results were not good but hopefully now you'll make progress - firstly getting rid of that pain.
Norah - lovely to read your post! We've all missed you, well, I have xx
Hazel - how awful! I have only heard you praising your job and you certainly put in hours of work! Very sad for you. Sending hugs to you. I think your employers will search long and hard to find another Hazel!
Sandra - hope today went well for you.
Jess - welcome to Sandra's haven!
Maureen - agree about the blackboard paint - although mine from Ronseal does say blackboard paint! What will they call white spirit? Mind boggles.
Love to all and night night,
    Myra xx
