Good Friday Morning Ladies,
Happy Boxing day, I hope that you all had a lovely day yesterday. We had a lovely relaxing day, a lovely Christmas dinner followed by games with the girls. Today we have a buffet, everyone can help themselves, that way we all get to relax together. Matt and Alex are working so sadly they can't come, Becca & Adam are coming later on and Lewis will be coming over after Soph & Lucy finish work.
I had a little look into why Boxing Day is so called...
is B
iing Day called oxingay?
There are many different theories behind Boxing Day, but a popular one is to do with helping out the less fortunate.
Boxes to collect money for the poor were placed in churches on Christmas day and opened the next day. These boxes were opened to honour St Stephen, the first Christian martyr, whose feast day falls on 26 December.
The most common belief is that ‘Boxing Day’ got its name due to servants and their relationship with their employers.
Boxing Day was a day to show compassion and there was show of goodwill displayed from masters to their servants, as they gave them a ‘Christmas Box’. The servants would also go home on Boxing Day to give ‘Christmas Boxes’ to their families.
Others suggest Boxing Day is to do with ships, as when setting sail, there would be a sealed box containing money on board for good luck. Were the trip deemed to be a success, the box was given to a priest and the contents then given to the poor. Another reason came from the Victorian ages, with employers giving Christmas boxes to their staff.

Happy Boxing Day everyone 😊
ReplyDeleteI hope you all had a lovely day yesterday. Your day sounds wonderful Sandra 😊 Mark and I had a quiet, relaxing day with ‘picky bits’ to eat and a glass or two of Bucks Fizz. We have Luke, Hayley and Marks mum coming today. Mark is cooking the Christmas dinner, but I’ll be on hand just in case 😂
Thank you for researching the Boxing Day meaning. I didn’t know the one about the ships.
Hope you all have a lovely day today
Sending hugs to you all xx
Morning and Happy Boxing Day!

Hi everyone and happy boxing day.
ReplyDeleteThanks for everything you do Sandra and also thank you for explaining what the boxing day means. Never thought about it really.
We had a great day with the family yesterday. The husband had made a feast and afterwards they were exchanging presents and as usually Molly and Louis were spoilt rotten. It was a nice day so some of them went out for a walk while others stayed back and just had a catch-up before coffee and chocolate mousse trifle that Tom's mum had made. Then it was quizzes before cheese board. We didn't get home before 1am but after all that food I couldn't go to bed so sat up until 4am this morning and still went up at normal time. I face timed my sister and she said that Xmas went ok, better than she thought so that was good.
I hope that the antibiotics soon kicks in Sandra and that you feel alright. Hoping that you otherwise had a good day everyone. Hugs to you all, Maria xx
Hi Sandra and all looking in.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the various names for Boxing Day. I hadn’t heard the one about the ships either.
I hope you had a lovely day with most of the family xx
We spent the day with Tim, Roz and the girls with picky bits. Gem had made a dish we hadn’t had before, possibly a Jamie Oliver one. All home made this morning apart from the Yorkshire pud which she made yesterday. A tasty mackerel pate with a lovely tangy red cabbage slaw all wrapped up in Yorkshire pudding slices….really delicious. It will definitely be made again.
Sleep well. Take care. Love Sue xx
Hello, hope everyone had a lovely Christmas time with family.
ReplyDeleteWe had a lovely time with our daughter and son-in-law. Feeling very full today.
Finished a fiendish jigsaw which took us a couple of days. R has been very busy playing for several church services.
They are going home early tomorrow morning.
Goodnight to all. Lilian
